How to Become a South Dakota Notary

This basic step-by-step guide walks you through the process of becoming a notary in South Dakota. Our notary package also includes in-depth application instructions.

1) Meet South Dakota Notary Requirements

In order to become a notary public in South Dakota, you must:

  • Be a United States citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a legal South Dakota resident (or a legal resident of an adjoining state who is employed or operating a business in South Dakota)
  • Have no felony convictions

2) Purchase a Surety Bond and Notary Seal

All South Dakota notaries need a $5,000 notary bond. The state does not provide bonds, but one is included our notary package. Remember, the name you enter on your application, bond, and seal must be identical.

Our notary package also includes a customized, self-inking notary stamp. Your stamp will include your name and the words “Notary Public,” “South Dakota,” and “seal” to satisfy state requirements. Your custom notary stamp will arrive within 10-12 business days.

3) Fill Out the State Application

When you purchase our notary package, we include a printable copy of the state application along with detailed instructions.

4) Submit Your Application to the State

Your printed and signed application must include:

  • A $30 check made payable to Secretary of State for the notary filing fee. We do not collect the state fee from you when you purchase the notary package.
  • A clear impression of your custom notary stamp, which should arrive within 10-12 business days of purchasing the notary package.
  • A name and signature that matches the exact name that appears on your notary bond.

Once ready, mail your completed notary application packet directly to:

Secretary of State
500 E. Capitol Ave., Suite 204
Pierre, South Dakota 57501

While notary journals are not required, the South Dakota Secretary of State strongly recommends that all notaries keep a journal of their work. That’s why we include a notary record-keeping journal in our complete notary package.
